Practical Approaches to Recovering Encrypted Digital Evidence
نویسنده
چکیده
As more criminals use encryption to conceal incriminating evidence, forensic examiners require practical methods for recovering some or all of the encrypted data. This paper presents lessons learned from investigations involving encryption in various contexts. By presenting successful and unsuccessful case examples, this paper gives forensic examiners a clearer understanding of the feasibility and limitations of various approaches to dealing with encryption. Additionally, by demonstrating how encryption has been successfully dealt with in past investigations, this paper provides examiners with techniques that we can apply in our work and encourages us to aggressively confront encryption. 1.0 Introduction As criminals become more aware of the capabilities of forensic examiners to recover digital evidence they are making more use of encryption technology to conceal incriminating data. Organized criminals use readily available encryption software (United States v. Scarfo) and online child pornographers encrypt their communications and the files they exchange (McAuliffe, 2001). Terrorist groups such as Al Qaeda are making use

متن کاملOn Achieving Encrypted File Recovery
As digital devices become more prevalent in our society, evidence relating to crimes will be more frequently found on digital devices. Computer forensics is becoming a vital tool required by law enforcement for providing data recovery of key evidence. File carving is a powerful approach for recovering data especially when file system metadata information is unavailable. Many file carving approa...
متن کاملPrivate Key based query on encrypted data
Nowadays, users of information systems have inclination to use a central server to decrease data transferring and maintenance costs. Since such a system is not so trustworthy, users' data usually upkeeps encrypted. However, encryption is not a nostrum for security problems and cannot guarantee the data security. In other words, there are some techniques that can endanger security of encrypted d...
متن کاملForensic data recovery from the Windows Search Database
Windows Search maintains a single database of the files, emails, programmes and Internet history of all the users of a personal computer, providing a potentially valuable source of information for a forensic investigator, especially since some information within the database is persistent, even if the underlying data are not available to the system (e.g. removable or encrypted drives). However,...
متن کاملPrivacy-Preserving Complex Query Evaluation over Semantically Secure Encrypted Data
In the last decade, several techniques have been proposed to evaluate different types of queries (e.g., range and aggregate queries) over encrypted data in a privacy-preserving manner. However, solutions supporting the privacypreserving evaluation of complex queries over encrypted data have been developed only recently. Such recent techniques, however, are either insecure or not feasible for pr...
